Privacy Statement

The STAR website is open to all users and use is not restricted by any requirement to register. Users may make use of our information and services without telling us who they are or supplying personal information.

STAR (Student Action for Refugees) is committed to safeguarding your privacy online. We use the information we collect about you to help us understand more about how our site is used to assist us in future development and to be able to send you information about STAR that may be of interest to you.

The following statement explains how STAR will treat any information you provide (STAR may change this policy from time to time so please check back periodically). This privacy policy does not apply to all other sites to which links are provided through this site. If you have any concerns about the protection of your privacy while visiting this site, or comments about this policy statement, please contact us.

What information do we collect?

STAR collects information volunteered by you such as survey information, email and postal address and any further contact information you may provide as well as your preferred method of communication.

How do we use, treat and store your information?

STAR uses the information we collect about you to help us understand more about how our site is used and to be able to send you information about STAR that may be of interest to you. STAR will also store details of users who indicate an interest in campaigning and will contact those users with campaign actions periodically.

If you contact us directly with a specific enquiry we will endeavor to respond as quickly as possible and may invite enquirers to become members of STAR. However this is in no way a condition of assistance and no further correspondence need be entered into after the initial enquiry has been dealt with.

STAR will not make information available to third parties or sell the information to others. However, from time to time, we agree with other like-minded organisations to write to some of each other’s supporters, for mutual benefit.

Who collects the information and who else is it shared with?

When using the STAR website you are sharing personal information with STAR National alone unless stated otherwise. As a general rule, STAR National will not disclose any of your personal information, except when we have your permission or under special circumstances, such as when we believe in good faith that the law requires it. STAR is committed to taking reasonable steps to protect the personal information that you provide to us.

What choices do you have about collection/use and distribution of your information?

STAR will send you information according to what you have asked for and may from time to time send you other information about related STAR activities or other organisations’ information which STAR deems to be appropriate. However you are able to choose not to receive this additional information at any time.

STAR does not sell or rent user information to anyone. From time to time, we agree with other like-minded organisations to write to some of each others’ supporters, for mutual benefit.
How can you access, update and delete your information?

The accuracy of your personal information is very important to STAR. Please contact the National Office at any time to inform us of any changes so that we can update our records. Contact STAR through this website.

What about messages/information posted to a forum or in a comment?

Messages posted to noticeboards will be moderated and any message deemed inappropriate will not be posted. Noticeboards will be kept up to date and messages will appear on the site for a maximum of 4 weeks. We would remind users that an email address supplied on a noticeboard will be available to the public world-wide and STAR will only post addresses if asked to do so specifically by users. STAR cannot be held responsible for any unwanted or offensive material received as a result.

If the information is of a confidential nature we strongly recommend you email/phone us directly rather than via the web forums.

What about children’s privacy?

The safety of children is very important to us. Our youth programme area does have a noticeboard but this is moderated and does not display the full name of individual children nor their addresses. Children should always ask a parent for permission before sending personal information to anyone online.

What kind of security precautions do we have in place to protect the loss, misuse or alteration of your information?

When you give STAR personal information, that information may be stored and processed outside of the UK and we take steps to ensure that your information is treated securely. Unfortunately, no data transmission over the internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect your personal information, STAR cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk. Once we receive your transmission, we make our best effort to ensure its security on our systems.
