About STAR campaigning
Why do we campaign?
Through our campaigning work STAR aims to: raise awareness and understanding of refugee and asylum issues from a human rights based perspective among students and young people; contribute towards desired policy and practice changes to benefit refugees and asylum seekers; and support other organisations working with refugees and asylum seekers.
STAR campaigns in two major ways:
- National: STAR national office coordinates national campaigns for STAR groups to get involved in across the UK (find out about our next national campaign below).
- Local: STAR groups campaign locally on issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers in their area and are supported by the STAR national office in doing this (go to the University Groups section to find out more).
STAR National Campaign 07/08
In the academic year 07/08 STAR will be campaigning to end the destitution of refused asylum seekers in support of the Still Human Still Here campaign.
If you’re a student or youth member then head over to our Resources section for lots of great tools to help you take action. However you can also contact the National Office to learn more about how STAR will be campaigning.
What is Still Human Still Here?

The Still Human Still Here campaign is dedicated to highlighting the plight of tens of thousands of refused asylum seekers who are being forced into abject poverty in an attempt to drive them out of the country. The campaign consists of refugee, human rights and migration organisations, lawyers, faith groups and anti-poverty charities and voluntary bodies who are joining forces to end the scandal of asylum destitution in the UK.
Supporters of the campaign believe that the denial of any means of subsistence to refused asylum seekers as a matter of government policy is both inhumane and ineffective.
We are calling on the Government to:
- End the threat and use of destitution as a tool of Government policy against refused asylum seekers
- Continue financial support and accommodation to refused asylum seekers as provided during the asylum process and grant permission to work until such a time as they have left the UK or have been granted leave to remain
- Continue to provide full access to health care and education throughout the same period
