Become a student trustee!

This is your chance to have a say in how STAR is run by becoming a member of the Board of Trustees, which is STAR’s governing body. Apply soon – the deadline is this Friday, 30th January.

What?

STAR is looking to appoint student trustees to sit on its Board of Trustees. The overall role of the Board is to ensure that the organisation is well run, meeting its aims and working within any relevant laws.

Why?

It is important for STAR that the Board makes good decisions, as they affect the whole organisation. In order to do this, the Board should involve a range of people with different views and experiences. It should also be made up of people that are relevant to its work.

STAR is a student-membership organisation and so it is vital that students participate in all decision-making. This will also ensure that STAR is accountable to its members and that students have their views heard at all levels. The Board of Trustees has a number of places reserved for students, two of which have been vacated in 2008.

“I have really enjoyed my time as a student trustee. I joined the Board in September 2007 when STAR was involved in strategic development and change. I contributed to the future direction of STAR by drawing on my experience as a member to voice opinions on how STAR could improve. This has been an incredible learning experience for me. I feel that I now understand how a charity works and the rules and regulations it must adhere to. I plan to stay on the board now despite graduating as I hope to ensure that STAR continues to support the rights of some of the most vulnerable people in the UK in a safe and sustainable way.”
