“I want to inspire people the same way STAR inspired me!”

Want to get involved with STAR? See how our Student Network Coordinator, Maddy, got involved, and why not contact her to find out how you can do the same?

I first heard of STAR when my friend decided to start a group in Exeter. I helped her out from time to time, but mostly because she was a friend – the problem of refugees and asylum seekers seemed distant and vague, and I didn’t really understand how I could make an impact, or even why I should…

I became angry at the press for demonising innocent people that are fleeing from the horrors of war and terror. I became angry at governments all over the world for turning their backs on to these people, justifying their (non-) actions by saying it was ‘not their problem’. I also became angry at myself for being stuck in the helpless situation of a student, who had no financial or influential means to improve the situation for anyone. Or so I thought…

Saying Refugees Welcome by volunteering!

This year Refugee Week is celebrating the welcome shown to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. That’s what STAR is all about and one of the ways we do it is through our many volunteering projects. Each year hundreds of student volunteers get active to help refugees learn English, get to grips with their school work, get cycling, have fun, make friends and much more!

You can find out about one of them from Lesedi, a member of Birmingham University STAR, who set up a great project helping refugee women learn IT skills. Here is what she had to say about it…

What can you do to help refugee children in Europe!

image

Tonight thousands of refugee children will sleep rough on the streets of Europe. 10,000 refugee children have already gone missing in Europe and we are worried that this number will rise unless we take action to support these children and welcome some of them to the UK.

Unaccompanied Children in Europe Still Need our Help

image
The Government have just announced that they will be taking 3,000 more unaccompanied refugee children from camps in the Middle East and Africa by 2020. This news will change the lives of thousands of children and our volunteers are looking forward to working with our partner organisations to offer them a warm welcome to their new home. However, we are conscious that this figure will not include any of the children who have already made it to Europe who still need our help.
