Museum Without a Home: STAR 2020

Award-winning exhibition Museum Without a Home completed another UK tour – this time throughout Scotland and the North-East of England – from January to February 2020. In collaboration with Oxfam and Amnesty International, STAR groups from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Manchester, and Sheffield hosted the exhibition at their universities.

STAR’s Action Week to Lift the Ban: Round Up

Every year, STAR groups come together to campaign on one issue where we can make a big impact. For Action Week this year (9 -15 March), 15 STAR groups campaigned for the right to work for people seeking asylum as part of the Lift the Ban campaign coalition in the UK.

STAR students get creative bringing people together online

STAR students haven’t let the current situation stop their incredible work. Northampton STAR held an online conversation club with young learners while Kent STAR organised a virtual cinema screening of a BAFTA award-winning documentary. Creativity carried on with Goldsmiths STAR preparing to launch the second issue of EKO magazine on an online platform to share stories from people with lived experience and volunteers while Glasgow STAR has been donating to support local refugee charities.

Our response to COVID-19

Following the new recommendations from the UK government, it was with a heavy heart that we decided to cancel all face-to-face events, campaigns and volunteering projects to protect the health and well-being of all our members and the wider community. The STAR staff team are now working from home until further notice and can be contacted as usual.

However, the work of STAR is very much continuing! In a time of crisis it’s even more important that we all come together with a message of welcome and stand in solidarity with refugees and people seeking asylum. Read on to find out more and what you can do to help.

Spotlight on STAR’s 25th birthday running team

This Sunday (1st March) STAR has a whole team of runners taking part in the Vitality Big Half to raise much needed funds for STAR! The event is part of our year-long celebration of turning 25, which is why the group has a combined fundraising target of £2500. At the time of writing they’re only £600 away from reaching it!

The Families Together coalition handed in petition with 75,000 signatures and we were there!

Today, STAR, the Families Together campaign coalition, and students from Oaklands School handed in a 75,000 strong petition to the Home Office calling on the government to reunite refugee families.
