It’s Volunteers’ Week!

Here at STAR we’re celebrating all of the amazing work that STAR student volunteers do welcoming refugees into their towns and cities. This year our groups have run and helped out at 56 volunteering projects supporting hundreds of refugees across the UK and Ireland.

Home Office confirms asylum seekers can study

There is no study ban for asylum seekers! After STAR exposed errors, The Home Office have issued new guidance to confirm that asylum seekers should not be given Immigration Bail conditions which state ”you cannot study”. Watch our CEO Emma on Newsnight yesterday explaining what’s happened.

MPs back STAR campaign to reunite refugee families in the UK!

Cheers and applause rang out in the House of Commons for refugees today (16th March 2018).

In rare scenes for a Friday – normally a quiet time in Parliament – the Refugee Family Reunion Bill was backed by MPs and now moves onto the next stage where it will be looked at in detail by a Committee.

This year the focus is the Families Together Campaign – as this suggests it’s all about reuniting refugee families.

Equal Access Conference - Bringing Down Barriers

For many students getting to university is enough to change their lives – even more so if you are an asylum seeker having fled your home country and sought protection in the UK.

Yet while refugees have the same status as everyone else living here, the position for asylum seekers and others is more complex.

‘Welcoming Refugees as Friends’

On New Year’s Day STAR had a star turn on national radio.

Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4 did a major feature on women who will be 18 years of age in 2018. They sought out interesting young women who are making their mark in society and asked STAR to help.

‘One Foot In Front Of The Other’ – Raising Money For STAR

What is it that makes a middle aged man want to run a 100 kilometre ‘ultramarathon’?

Peter Ford – who’s 51 and in May will take on that challenge by running from London to Brighton – has a ready answer: a desire to help STAR “because of their work in supporting refugees settle in the UK.”
