Applying to University for 2020/21 - UCAS Deadline on 15th January

September 2020 might seem a long way away for those of you looking to get into university but if you’re applying for undergraduate courses you must apply through UCAS by the 15th of January. image

If you want to apply for an undergraduate course in for 2020/21 then you will have to make an application through UCAS, the UK application system for undergraduate courses, before January 15th 2020.

If you might not be eligible to student finance because of a continuing asylum claim or because you have humanitarian protection status or discretionary leave to remain (see below) you should consider applying to universities which had scholarship programs in 2019/20 for people seeking refugee protection in the UK and will probably offer them for 2020/21. A full list can be found on the STAR website.

Even if you do apply for a scholarship you will still have to apply through UCAS (or directly for postgraduate courses) and receive a place at that university before applying for the scholarship programme so the 15th of January deadline could be the difference between going to university in 2020 or not.

How do I know if I’m eligible for student finance?

In general, in the UK, if you have refugee status you are eligible for student finance. If you are seeking asylum you cannot access student finance. If you have discretionary or limited leave to remain or humanitarian protection status you will only be able to access student finance after 3 years ‘ordinary residence’ in the UK. For a detailed explanation of student finance eligbility for refugees and people seeking asylum visit the UKCISA website
