STAR’s annual conference is a fantastic opportunity for all students to:
- Learn about refugees
- Meet other student activists
- Gain practical skills in volunteering, campaigning and awareness raising

Keynote speakers
- Helen Bamber OBE, Helen Bamber Foundation
- Mehri Jafari, Iranian student activist
- Julian Huppert MP, Liberal Democrats
Information Workshops on topics including:
- Intro to Asylum, Refugee Action
- Detention of Asylum Seekers, with Bail for Immigration Detainees
- Access to Health Care, with Medical Foundation for Care of Victims of Torture
- Human Rights Abuses, with Amnesty
- Refugee and Asylum Seeking Children: Rights and Entitlements, with Children’s Legal Centre
Question Time panel debate, the chance to ask those nagging questions, including Helen Bamber, Nick Oakeshott (Asylum Aid) and our very own student trustee from Southampton STAR Nat Avdiu as Chair!
Saturday night party witha succulent dinner and all the best STARs from around the country ![]()
STAR’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), with one vote for every STAR group.
Cairo STAR (yes in Egypt) present their amazing work.

Saturday night party and overnight accommodation are within walking distance from the conference venue.
How much does it cost?
£25 entry, including all meals throughout the week & Saturday night party.
- Accommodation on Saturday night £5 extra (you’ll need a sleeping bag)
- Bursaries available for asylum seekers
Your Students Union may be able to subsidise your travel or fee expenses.
