Election Action to Protect the Right to Asylum
The next General Election is a great opportunity to speak up for refugees. STAR has teamed up with Refugee Council and Liberty to ask candidates to sign the Asylum Election Pledge.
The Election
The next General Election will probably be on 6th May.
This is a great opportunity to raise important issues for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK with future members of Parliament.
We want candidates to remember the importance of providing safety to people fleeing war, torture and persecution.
Asylum Election Pledge
STAR has teamed up with Refugee Council, Liberty and Scottish Refugee Council to ask candidates to sign the Asylum Election Pledge.
The pledge calls on candidates from all parties to ensure a fair and balanced debate on asylum and remember the importance of refugee protection.
Help us to protect the right to asylum!
Take Action
Ask your local candidates and MP to sign the Asylum Election Pledge
It will take 5 mins to send a clear message about what local people want!
Please remember to tell STAR national what response you get.

STAR Election 2010 Guide
Asylum and immigration has been a hot political topic in recent years with each political party keen to show how tough they will be in government. Refugees and asylum seekers are often talked about in extremely negative terms using false or misleading information.
You can help to:
- check that candidates stick to the facts
- keep the debates positive
- encourage positive statements of support from future MPs
STAR’s position
STAR’s aim is to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. We therefore support policies that will further this aim.
STAR encourages all political parties to hold policies that will have a positive impact on refugees in the UK.
Your STAR group can ask all Parliamentary Candidates to state their support for:
- The 1951 UN Convention on Refugees and the right of people to seek asylum in the UK
- An end to the detention of children seeking asylum
- Raising cash support for asylum seekers
