Make sure you join us on Saturday 17th November 2018 in London for the annual STAR National Student Conference! You can get your ticket here!

This year the theme is Local Action – Global Impact : Standing with refugees in a world of rising walls. It’s your chance to get together with like minded students from across the UK, Ireland and beyond to hear from expert speakers and learn how you can take action to stand with refugees.

An unprecedented 25.4 million people have been forced to flee war and persecution and live as refugees – over half are children. Yet nations and communities are divided as to whether to provide a safe haven or close their doors.

Through workshops and keynote talks from student activists, experts and organisations on the frontline – including Médecins Sans Frontières, Survivors Speak Out, British Red Cross, Right to Remain, British Future and more – we will look at what happens to refugees when they reach Europe, and specifically the UK, and how the reception given can make a difference to people’s chance of rebuilding their shattered lives.

Topics covered will include the UK asylum system, immigration detention, public attitudes, access to Higher Education and of course the part students play in making a difference and what you can do to take action.

Speakers and workshop leaders include:

Gemma Gillie, Head of Media, Médecins Sans Frontières

Jon Featonby, Refugees and Asylum – Policy and Advocacy Manager, British Red Cross.

Kolbassia Haoussou, Co-founder and Coordinator, Survivors Speak Out

Michael Collins, Coordinator, Right to Remain & These Walls Must Fall campaign

Jill Rutter, Director of Strategy and Relationships, British Future

Join us in London on the 17th November 2018 to learn, share and engage to find out how we can welcome refugees and be part of a global response, through local action.
