LSE STAR Detention Conference “Human Rights Denied”

A conference hosted by the LSE Migration Studies Unit in conjunction with LSE STAR (Student Action For Refugees) and the London Detainee Support Group. “Human Rights Denied: Indefinite Immigration Detention – Is There No End In Sight?” 9am – 5pm, Saturday 6th November, LSE Campus.

This one day conference seeks to address political, legal and health issues concerning the growing practice of immigration detention without time-limit, which affects large numbers of asylum seekers in the UK. Anyone interested in human rights, civil liberties and migration are welcome to attend.

Alongside workshops conducted by Medical Justice, Bail For Immigration Detainees and the London Detainee Support Group, we are delighted to confirm the following speakers:

Helen Bamber OBE, Co-Founding Director of the Helen Bamber Foundation
Alison Harvey, General Secretary of the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association
Jerome Phelps, Director of the London Detainee Support Group
Alexander Beck, Senior Legal Officer, UNHCR Headquarters
Former detainees, who will be providing their own personal testimonies.

In conjunction with the conference, The Cambridge Review of International Affairs is issuing a Call for Papers for a thematic section which it will publish on Indefinite Detention – research students, young scholars and policy makers are encouraged to apply.
