Sponsor Lucy’s mammoth cycle for STAR!
Lucy Goldsmith of Plymouth STAR is cycling 100 miles across Dartmoor…And it’s all in aid of STAR! If you want to be part of this, but without all the training, get sponsoring and tell your friends.
What is Lucy doing?
Lucy will be cycling a gruelling 100 miles across Dartmoor on 26 June.
Why?!
Lucy is hoping to raise at least £1,500 for STAR. In her own words: “to enable STAR to continue helping students to carry on vital work with asylum seekers and refugees, who come to our country to escape such awful experiences I can’t begin to imagine…Working with STAR has been an amazing experience and getting to know people living in Plymouth who are seeking asylum, or have already gained refugee status, has been fantastic.”
How do I get involved?
By sponsoring Lucy you can help raise £1,500 for STAR. Donate on her JustGiving page It’s quick, easy and totally secure.
Thank you! And good luck Lucy!
Lucy’s diary
“Cycling 100 miles over the hills of Dartmoor will be extremely painful… but it will be so worth it to raise money for STAR and I really hope to spread awareness of refugee and asylum issues in the process.”
“I did a beautiful 70 miles ride along a fantastic part of the Devon coast a couple of weeks ago… My legs didn’t function too well after that though so think I might do a shorter ride this week so my legs are still able to run.”
22nd March
“Last Saturday I went for a beautiful bike ride with a local cycling club called Yogi. We took the Torpoint ferry from Plymouth to Cornwall and went along the coastal road around the edge of the pensinsula, stopped at the café at Seaton beach and then headed back along the coastal road. It was windy and it’s a very hilly route (though it’s all hills around here really) but was great! Then on Sunday I managed a nice run from Plymouth along the River Plym which leaves the city, getting further and further out into the middle of nowhere along a cycle/footpath along the Plym valley. I thought it might have been about 20 miles but reckon it was only 18. I was pleased to have made it all the way up and back though as it ends at Clearbrook on Dartmoor, really beautiful and great to feel you’ve made it there on your own two feet. It took 1hour10 to get there and about the same amount of time to get back. During the week I did a couple of swims and runs, and cycled to and from uni.
Last Wednesday I decided it’d be fun to go out on my housemate’s skateboard, then thought I’d have a go at a very steep hill… As it picked up speed and started to wobble I jumped off, ran a few paces, then flew onto my face in the road. Got away with a few grazes and bruises and an injured right shoulder but that hasn’t stopped me running or cycling!
Yesterday I went for another ride with the Yogis, about 55miles of hills over Dartmoor, just to remind me of what I’ll be letting myself in for with the ride in June (ARGH!) and then this morning I ran the same route as last Sunday but went on 2 miles at the top from Clearbrook to a little town called Yelverton, then did the 2 miles back and all the way back down the trail. So it was 22 miles in total and trying to walk tomorrow should be interesting! Running that distance along a river, when you’re really dehydrated (and I never carry water) is quite painful, I just wanted to drink the river and couldn’t wait to down a couple of pints (water obviously) when I got home!”
Update: Lucy has unfortunately sprained her ankle and will be unable to run the London Marathon for STAR as planned. However all is not lost as STAR’s place has been deferred to next year’s marathon, which Lucy will hopefully run for us!
