Refugees Welcome? The annual student conference about welcoming refugees in the UK!

Come along to Student Action for Refugees’ annual conference to hear from lots of fantastic speakers about how people are welcoming – or challenging – refugees in the UK.

On Saturday 18th November STAR is hosting its annual national Conference in London where students from all over the UK will hear from a range of cutting-edge speakers.

The theme of the one-day gathering is ‘Refugees Welcome?’

STAR’s annual conference brings together students, refugees, human rights practitioners and refugee agencies for a day or learning and discussion. We will look at the successes and challenges of how the UK welcomes refugees – and how students are making a difference.

This year we are very lucky to be joined by a range of keynote speakers:

Ahmad Al-Rashid is a researcher in forced migration. Ahmad campaigns on key refugee issues, having recently completed a Master’s degree at SOAS.

Laura Padoan works as External Relations Associate for UNHCR. She has been at the UN Refugee Agency in London since 2008, and has worked in Ethiopia, Jordan, DR Congo, Lampedusa and Calais. Alex Fraser is UK Director Refugee Support & Restoring Family Links at British Red Cross

Actor, facilitator and activist – Syed Najibi – also joins us. Sayed left Afghanistan in 2012, embarking on an 8-month journey before arriving in the UK. He makes use of his five languages to welcome and help integrate new arrivals to the UK.

There are also lots of interesting and informative workhops during the day including a session about public attitudes towards refugees led by Sunder Katwala – director of the British Future thinktank.

We’ve also got great workshops from NACCOM (a national network of accommodation providers for destitute asylum seekers and refugees) and the UK Lesbian & Gay Immigration Group.

The conference is open to ALL students and bursaries are available for asylum seekers – for more details email ‘’

Held at a venue close to Old Street Station, ticket holders will be sent details together with a conference pack in advance. You can book now using

We look forward to seeing you there!
