Following a fantastic year of action, many of you will now be getting ready step down from your role within your STAR group. This means that you will have to hand over the responsibility for your group to a new generation of STARs!

A smooth handover is extremely important to ensure that your STAR group continues to make a difference to refugees and builds on all your fabulous achievements this year.

Once you’ve found some new people to take on responsibility, you need to help prepare them to run the group.

We’ve put together a simple guide to make this as easy as possible!

Top Tips!

Here are some Top Tips for a Perfect Handover, pooled from the wisdom of STARs across the network:

  • Prepare Committee Handover Notes
This is the most important step! It will inform new members of all the main activities that you got up to, your volunteering projects, how you communicated with members, and any tips on how to attract crowds or help from your Students’ Union. The more information that you pass on the quicker the new committee can get the group up and running! Don’t forget to send a copy to STAR national for safe keeping. We have put together a handy handover information template for you to use.
  • Advertise the free committee training on June 16th
The training is free and open to all potential committee members. The day will provide all future STAR leaders with all the info and inspiration they will need to run a successful STAR group! See what we got up to last year here.
  • Talk to the new committee members
Sit down and have a face to face chat with the new group. Explain the duties of each role, the difficulties that you encountered, and how you overcame them. Elaborate the benefits you gained from getting involved with STAR, be it making new friends, a sense of achievement, or having fun!
  • Make sure all information is accessible
Transfer control of social media sites (facebook, twitter, blogs, email accounts) and make sure all passwords are written down. If you have archived files/ important emails make sure that they are accessible. If you have a locker at university where you store your resources, don’t forget to hand over the key!
  • Introduce the new committee members and set a date for the transfer.
You should inform STAR national, your Students’ Union, the different groups you volunteer with, and other societies you have previously collaborated with of the changeover, and who they should contact from that point onwards. On the handover day a leaving party can be a clear-cut way of handing control to the new team.
  • Sign your outgoing committee members up to Friends of STAR
Friends of STAR allows ex-STARs to stay in the loop with campaigns and events across the STAR network.

Happy handover STARs!
