Here comes Action for Refugees Week!

Action for Refugees Week: 22nd – 26th February
Every year the whole STAR network takes action together to promote refugees to other students and campaign for refugees.
What’s going on in Action for Refugees Week?
Friday 19 February
Hull members started early with another stall with the Equal Access petition.
Monday 22 February
Essex members will be approaching students from Monday 22 February – Friday 26 in lunch areas to get signatures for campaign.
Hull will be setting up a stall and getting students to sign up to the Equal Access campaign.
Leeds will be holding a photo exhibition on asylum housing at the North side of Parkinson Court until Friday 26 February.
Manchester are holding a fund/awareness raiser including music from Kagame, Mr. E and 2 Bad DJ and there will be an after-party at Red Rum hosted by Drop the Mustard.
Tuesday 23 February
Leeds have invited Jo Newell to speak about access to health for refugees once they have arrived to the UK.
Southampton is going to set up a stall and collect signatures for the Equal Access petition.
Wednesday 24 February
Liverpool will be holding a stall to raise awareness of refugees and the effects of recent changes to registering for asylum in Liverpool.
Hull members are attending a Vice-Chancellor’s Question Time.
Leeds will be showing ‘Grow Your Own’ at the Peanut Gallery.
Glasgow have organised an Informal Social with some volunteers from the Red Cross and some asylum seekers and refugees.
Thursday 25 February
Durham will march from the Market Place to the University Library dressed in white boiler suits and doctor’s masks to signify ‘voiceless’ refugees. The boiler suits will have short attention grabbing asylum facts written on the fronts and backs. They will be approaching the general public with the Equal Access petition to present to the Vice-Chancellor.
Birmingham will be holding a stall in the library to promote Equal Access campaign, upcoming events, petitions and recruiting new members.
Bradford are leafleting about general refugee issues around lunchtime.
Leeds have booked a Volunteering Stall in the Union Foyer providing information along STAR volunteering opportunities, petitioning for the Equal Access campaign and highlighting LGBT refugee issues. They have also invited Shirkoo Kanabi and Mthokozisi Myoni to speak about their experiences as refugees in the UK at the Terrace ‘Wrapid’ area.
Manchester are hosting a night of films, speakers and a workshop called ‘In Their Shoes’ run by a local GP, a refugee. The workshop is supposed to help people to imagine what it is like to go through the asylum process.
Nottingham will set up a stall to collect signatures for Equal Access campaign outside the university library. They will also be issuing posters and information about refugees and asylum seekers.
Friday 26 February
Southampton will be staging a joint sleep-out with Amnesty and Engineers without Borders in a mock refugee tent.
Cardiff are holding a ‘Refugee Rhythms’ event for ‘Go Global’ fortnight’.
Sunday 28 February
Leeds will be issuing a refugee cookbook and international brunch at the Common Place where they teach English on Saturdays.
Tuesday 2 March
Birmingham will be showing the documentaries by Refugee Action, called ‘Forced to flee’. After the film there will be informal discussion and a Q&A session.
Still to come…
Warwick will be performing a play and holding a concert with a refugee band.
