KCL STAR bags prize in National Award Scheme

Well done to KCL STAR for winning the runner up prize at the British Red Cross Humanitarian Citizen Awards!

The annual British Red Cross Humanitarian Citizen Awards celebrate the achievements and positive contribution that young people make to others’ lives. At an exclusive ceremony in London on 17 November, the overall winners, selected from more than 70 nominees, were announced.

KCL STAR were awarded the runner up prize for the creation of a successful homework support club for young refugees in Clapham. The club was set up in April 2005 in conjunction with the Katherine Low Settlement, a local community centre. It works to assist some of society’s most vulnerable children by providing them with extra curricular help and support. The two weekly sessions are divided between one to one focus on core numeric and literacy skills, and activities such as art, cooking, sport and dance. KCL STAR Group were nominated for “the vision, enthusiasm and dedication they have shown in establishing and maintaining this project. The time they invest in building long term, positive relationships with the young people who attend the club and supporting their development is truly exceptional”.

Merate Kristos, Mya, and Alan show off their award!

The award was particularly pertinent in light of the recently published Barnardo’s report on the terrible conditions faced by child asylum seekers in the U.K. The report shows that families awaiting decisions live on incomes significantly lower than average benefit levels, and often live in hostile communities in damp and unsafe housing conditions. Projects such as KCL STAR’s homework support club are a great example of volunteers providing a safe and fun space for children enduring an uncertain and isolated reality.

Another dedicated STAR member nominated for the award was James Fisher, whose outstanding contribution towards STAR’s campaign work has been indispensable.
