STAR Volunteer Training 2010- Another Success!

STAR held a volunteering training day at the national office on Saturday 20 February 2010. STAR groups were invited to learn more about running volunteering projects and recruiting volunteers.

“The best thing about the training was everything! So massive thanks as it was super helpful!”

What happened?

STAR members from Warwick, Teesside, Southampton, Newcastle, Glasgow, De Montfort, Bradford and Barts came down, as well as STAR’s Yorkshire Volunteer Alison Leslie.

All those that managed to come all the way to London for the night before were invited to a social including dinner on Friday to meet other STAR groups and the national team.

STAR members started the morning by presenting their volunteering projects through mime, paints, posters and play-doh – and some projects were certainly easier to understand than others!

STAR members were able to share ideas and experiences with other STARs from all over the UK, get advice on running a volunteering project and learn more about how the national team can assist volunteering projects.

“I feel more inspired to get going with our project…”

Workshops

STAR staff held training workshops on:

  • ‘Finding and keeping volunteers’
  • ‘Why evaluate and how to do it’
  • ‘Mentoring for young refugees in education’
  • ‘Health and social care needs of refugees’

Catherine Gladwell from the Refugee Support Network explained to us why refugee children might need support with their education, what educational mentoring is and what we can do.

Our Chief Executive Emma Williams discussed the health and social needs of refugees and how volunteers could help.

Richard Malfait and Sophie Cottrell explained to us the importance of evaluating and provided our STAR groups with some basic tips.

“Thank you! I really enjoyed it and I think I have lots of useful things to think about for setting up our project.”

“The best thing about the training was the chance to swap stories and ideas with other groups and ask questions to knowledgeable people and the chance to see how we can make a difference.”
