1,754 people have died in the last 112 days while attempting to cross the Mediterranean. Many were refugees, fleeing for their lives from conflicts in Syria and Eritrea. They had no choice but to risk all in rickety, packed boats. The world is suffering from the greatest refugee crisis since the Second World War, over 3 million people have been forced out of Syria but there is no route to safety in Europe. Of the 16.7 million refugees worldwide just 23,500 reached the UK in 2013.

In 2014 our Government announced we will not support search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean because they encourage more people to come. We knew this was not true and tragically the huge death toll has proved us right.

STAR and 28 other charities have written to the Prime Minister saying we must restart the search and rescue operations. You can read the letter which was also published in The Independent here.

Now we need your voices to get our request heard: sign the petition to restart the rescues and give safe passage to refugees.

There are 13,000 STARs, please make sure every one of you plus 10 of your friends sign the petition.

It’s a matter of life and death, use your power and show the world Refugees are Welcome Here!
