TAKE ACTION to raise asylum support rates!
People seeking protection should not be forced to live on £5 a day. We need you to take action to help raise asylum support rates!
![]()
As a single adult applying for asylum you are currently expected to live on £35.13 a week – that’s just £5 a day. You are not permitted to work.
Right now the Government is considering what level of support to give asylum seekers in the next financial year (2010/2011).
STAR is working with other organisations in the Still Human Still Here campaign coalition to put pressure on the Home Office. We want to raise asylum support levels to allow people to meet their basic living needs.

Template Letter to MP – support rates
Ask your MP to contact the Home Secretary to:
- Express concern that the majority of asylum seekers are forced to survive on £5 a day
- Urge that asylum support rates for 2010/11 be set at least 70% of Income Support and to no less than £45 a week for single adults.
- You can find your MP’s contact details at http://www.writetothem.com
- You can check the Refugee Council’s page for further information and to download the template letter.
It is inexcusable that the Government is trying to cut costs by punishing people who came here asking for protection. Speak out against it!
