Art! Umbrellas! Dancing! – STAR had lots of fun at Refugee Week 2011.
What a lovely Refugee Week we all had! We paraded through London with our umbrellas, danced at the Celebrating Sanctuary festival, planned STARs next year at Committee Training, showed off refugee art at STAR LSE’s Crossing Borders exhibition and even read nice things about refugees in the Daily Express!
The Umbrella Parade took place on the 19th June and drew the crowds, including many STARs, so thanks for joining in and a special mention to our STAR stewards. Look at us all at Amnesty International’s photo gallery
The Parade culminated at the Celebrating Sanctuary festival on London’s South Bank, with music, food, stalls and some funky life size puppets. It was a huge success and the Guardian called it ‘one of the finest and bravest free festivals in the capital’ in its review
The media did its bit, telling the world about the contributions refugees make to the UK, read what The Daily Express had to say.
Finally, next years STAR committee members came to London for a brain stretching day of training and skill sharing, with help from our friends at UNHCR and Refugee Council. We all learned so much from each other and hatched some really exciting plans for next year. On the way home we stopped to admire the Refugee Week poster on the underground.
