Why STAR is supporting the Global Climate Strike

On Friday 20th September STAR will join the Global Climate Strike because of the impact climate change has for refugees. image

The 2018 Global Compact for Refugees, recognises ‘climate, environmental degradation and natural disasters increasingly interact with the drivers of refugee movements’ and the Environmental Justice Foundation describes climate change as “the unpredictable ingredient that, when added to existing social, economic and political tensions, has the potential to ignite violence and conflict with disastrous consequences’. These conflicts will create refugees and forced displacement.

Here in the UK, we know that poorer communities and people of colour are more vulnerable to the different forms of climate disruption, environmental degradation and pollution, and so refugees and people seeking asylum are likely to be disproportionately affected.

This is why we will be out on the streets this Friday standing alongside the millions of people who are demanding that action be taken on climate change.

In London, alongside other refugee and migrant organisations, we will be joining a bloc organised by JCWI, check out the Facebook event here. If you are not in London here is how to find the strike nearest you. We hope you can join us!
