Outreach
Why we do it
Raising awareness about refugee issues is one of the main aims of STAR’s work. One of the ways we do this is through educational workshops with young people of all ages and one of the most effective ways of doing that is through peer education – young people teaching other young people.
What we do
The STAR outreach programme uses drama and other creative methods to raise awareness of and discuss asylum issues with young people in schools, colleges and youth clubs – from directly involving young people in dramatic reconstructions of what it is like to have to flee persecution and seek asylum in Journey to Safety, to finding out the facts and busting asylum myths in refugee quizzes.
How your STAR group can get involved
If you or your group is interested in busting the asylum myths and raising awareness of refugee issues among other young people in fun and funky ways then the STAR outreach programme is for you!
STAR national office can support your group in delivering outreach with our simple 4 point plan:
- Contact the national office and arrange for an outreach training day which will give your group the skills to deliver outreach workshops as well as the knowledge to approach schools and colleges with confidence
- Deliver some innovative and engaging awareness raising workshops in school
- Tell us how it went
- Repeat points 2 and 3!
About Journey to Safety
Your entire life has been turned upside down. You no longer feel that it is safe for you to live in your home country – in fact you believe you or members of your family could be killed if you stay.
What do you do next?
Journey to Safety is a drama-based activity that explores this question – from escaping persecution, to crossing the border and claiming asylum in an unknown country.
About STAR groups outreach training days
STAR national office provide training to enable STAR groups to replicate outreach activities, particularly Journey to Safety (see above).
Sessions typically last half a day and can be run with groups of 4 upwards
No prior experience of delivering workshops required!
By the end of the day you will be able to run Journey to Safety and other awareness raising activities yourselves to peers and young people in different settings, feel confident in running sessions about refugee issues with young people and know how to go about organising outreach sessions with schools and colleges.
Outreach training is free to all STAR groups.
