Past Activities
STAR members get musical at Celebrating Sanctuary, a student & youth training event
The youth network began in 2003 for young people aged 16-18 and has since expanded to include young people up to the age of 25. Highlights so far include:
Youth members lobby parliament over ESOL cuts
A number of youth members joined the national lobby of parliament to protest at the proposed cuts to ESOL funding. Members were able to meet with MPs and register their concern at the cut in funding to English classes.
Forum for the future of democracy 2007
One of Star’s youth members participated in the Council of Europe’s Forum for the future of democracy, held in Sweden. The youth member represented STAR and was an important voice for refugee issues in the European forum.
STAR National Conference and Summer Training
The number of youth members attending annual conference and summer training gets bigger each year. Both events give members an opportunity to gain knowledge on refugee related issues, learn new skills, to listen to high profile speakers and, most importantly – have fun, make new friends and meet like minded people.
STAR Youth Roadshow
Around the country in three weeks! STAR youth volunteers and youth network members went to Bristol, Norwich and Bradford with fantastic multimedia exhibitions from Global Link, plus our own simulation activity ‘Journey to Safety’. We raised awareness with loads of young people about the issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers.
Plus: visits by the STAR team and volunteers to loads of schools, youth clubs and events to raise awareness about the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers!
